I will not pretend to be as intense a coffee connoisseur as my husband, however I have a deep appreciation for a smooth and balanced, easy to drink cup of Joe. When we began to plan our holiday in Japan, I knew there would be a lot of coffee on our itinerary. We visited 8 coffee shops in Tokyo during our 6 days there, including a flighted coffee tasting!
John prefers a pour over — almost exclusively — while my beverage of choice these days is an iced oat milk latte. That’s what I’m ranking these on. Just for fun, I’ll put my husband’s ranking of Tokyo coffee shops down below.

- PASSAGE COFFEE (multiple locations)
– Japan, 〒103-0012 Tokyo, Chuo City, Nihonbashihoridomecho, 2 Chome−10−9 MIMARU SUITES 東京日本橋 2F
– The best iced oat milk latte I’ve ever had in my life! We went to their hotel location, which was spacious and empty first thing in the morning. - CAMELBACK sandwich&espresso
– 42-2 Kamiyamacho, Shibuya City, Tokyo 150-0047, Japan
– Outstanding coffee, extremely friendly staff, and a stellar egg sandwich with Japanese mayo. No seats, just stand in line to order and hope there’s room on the tiny bench out front for eating your sandwich. - ONIBUS COFFEE
– Chome-14-1 Kamimeguro, Meguro City, Tokyo 153-0051, Japan
– An adorable coffee spot with a zen outdoor seating area (just benches, don’t expect to linger over a laptop). Delicious coffee! - VERVE Coffee Roasters (multiple locations in Tokyo, but primarily an LA-based coffee chain)
– NEWoMan Shinjuku 2F 5-24-55, Sendagaya, Shibuya City, Tokyo, 151-0051
– The main appeal of the Shinjuku location is that they open daily at 7am, which is rare for Tokyo coffee shops. A really solid iced latte! - KOFFEE MAMEYA (2 locations, be sure to choose Kakeru if you want the tasting)
– 2 Chome-16-14 Hirano, Koto City, Tokyo 135-0023, Japan
– A truly outstanding coffee experience. Guided tasting of the coffee bean of your choosing, prepared in a variety of ways. They also have a coffee cocktail tasting!

Honestly, this list just begins to scratch the surface of coffee shops in Tokyo. You could stay for a month, visit a new shop every single day, and not run out of places to visit. The coffee scene is just so strong.
Not in my top 5, but we also visited GLITCH Coffee Roasters (Ginza), Bear Pond Espresso (Shimokitazawa), and Fuglen (Asakusa). I didn’t love any of these.

John’s ranking of pour overs:
- Onibus
- Passage
- Koffee Mameya
- Glitch
- Verve
- Camelback
- Fuglen
- Bear Pond
His top ranked coffee from the entire trip, however (and my #2 choice overall), was actually in Kyoto. We seriously cannot wait to go back. What. A. Trip!
