My husband and I just got back from a dream trip to Napa. We focused primarily on Napa Valley, though there is one Sonoma recommendation below. We’re going to need an entirely separate trip (or 2!) to tackle that region.
Perhaps the biggest highlight for me as a wine lover was just how much I learned by being physically present. You can sip on wine all day long, but if you’re not interacting with the people who make it and sell it, you’re missing out on a lot of information.
Alright, now that we got those things out of the way, let’s dive in! I’m including a Table of Contents here so that you can quickly jump around to each winery that we visited for a review, however if you’re interested in my personal favorites, check out Ari’s Recommendations.

Hess Persson Estates
I’m not sure I’ll ever forget our tasting at Hess Persson, and it might be because it was our very first tasting ever in Napa, but more likely because it was truly memorable.
Key notes from the tasting
- Tasting: Cabernet Appellation tasting
- Cost: $125/pp ($120/pp for wine club members)
- Time: 120 minutes (we requested 90 minutes to move onto our next tasting with enough time)
- Overview: A side-by-side comparison of 4 different Cabernet Sauvignon wines grown in different appellations and then 1 final wine blended from all 4 regions.
- Snacks included: Tasting crackers
- Highlights: Stunning property; personal art collection from the owner is on display in the building; located up on a mountain, about 10-15 minutes from valley floor.

K. Laz Wine Collection
I think it’s extremely worthwhile to add a few tastings at wine collections into the mix. These are distributors of many different wines. After a heavy red wine tasting, it was nice to taste some whites and lighter reds. We loved K. Laz.
Key notes from the tasting
- Tasting: Our friends are wine club members and signed us up for the tasting, so I’m not sure which tier we were in. See all K. Laz tasting options here (they have locations in Yountville and San Francisco).
- Cost: Ranges from $85/pp to $550/pp depending on tier of wine selected.
- Time: 90 minutes
- Overview: K. Laz is a wine collection, meaning they share wine from different wineries and vineyards in the area.
- Snacks included: Assorted cheese and nuts
- Highlights: A flighted tasting of six wines from different wineries and vineyards in the region. All tastings are private and curated based on individual preferences for wine varietals and regions.

Note that there are two different wineries with extraordinarily similar names. This one, Stag’s Leap, and another one called Stags Leap (no apostrophe).
Key notes from the tasting
- Tasting: Estate collection tasting flight
- Cost: $75/pp (Free for wine club members)
- Time: 90 minutes
- Overview: A collection of wines from Stag’s Leap FAY and S.L.V. estate vineyards.
- Snacks included: None
- Highlights: We were seated outside on a patio overlooking the specific estate vineyards where the wines were produced. Had a wonderful host (who liked to crack jokes). The wines available for tasting were different than what is distributed locally.

Ovid Napa Valley
Very much a splurge, Ovid is one of those high-end places where it’s helpful to know somebody who has tasted there before or is already a wine club member. The wines are delicious, but at that price point, it’s hard to justify when there are so many options in Napa.
Key notes from the tasting
- Tasting: Private tasting of 3 wines
- Cost: $300/pp
- Time: 90-120 minutes
- Overview: Located on Pritchard Hill on top of mostly volcanic soils, which offer a unique growing region for the grapes. Part of the Silver Oak winery family.
- Snacks included: Tasting crackers
- Highlights: Breathtaking views of the valley; interesting experimental wines each year (1 red, 1 white — they’re labeled “Experiment” and the blends change annually) in addition to a few estate Cabernet Sauvignon releases, intended to be aged. Purchase available only to mailing list.

Spire Collection
Prepare to be wowed. Spire was another great collection which showcased the versatility of grapes based on their terroir. They represent wineries and vineyards all over the world, which was a nice deviation from trying mostly big Napa Cabs. Appointments only available via email.
Key notes from the tasting
- Tasting: Private tasting of 5 wines (which turned into 8 wines…)
- Cost: $65/pp (possibly free for wine club members)
- Time: 90-120 minutes
- Overview: The Spire portfolio represents wineries from all over the world, not just CA. To sum up their wines: sophisticated luxury.
- Snacks included: None
- Highlights: Stunning property right at the tip of Calistoga, overlooking the valley floor with breathtaking mountain views. Our host was incredibly knowledgeable (a former fine dining chef turned wine connoisseur). At the end, we did a ‘blind tasting’ and were blown away by the beauty of a local Merlot (we all guessed Cab).

Bremer Family Winery
Bremer Family Winery is a hidden gem. Nothing about it is pretentious, from the property to the people leading the tastings who are extraordinarily down to earth. Amazing value.
Key notes from the tasting
- Tasting: The standard tasting is of 6 different wines.
- Cost: $35/pp (waived with the purchase of 1 bottle of wine/pp)
- Time: 60-90 minutes
- Overview: The key takeaway is that Bremer ages the wines before they sell them to you. And they’re not increasing prices tremendously. Instead of buying wine, aging it in a cellar, and enjoying it later, they’re doing the leg work for you.
- Snacks included: None
- Highlights: All the wines we tried were extremely drinkable straight from the bottle. No aeration or decanting needed. Members receive additional tastings of older library wines. Cave tours available at no added cost.

HALL Wines
Our experience at HALL Wines was the most informal of our trip. There’s a large tasting room adjacent to a patio with outdoor seating (certain sections are for members only), and guests can float in and out as they like. Very casual vibe.
Key notes from the tasting
- Tasting: The Art of Cabernet
- Cost: $40/pp Monday – Thursday or $60/pp Friday – Saturday
- Time: 60-90 minutes
- Overview: Flight of 4 Cabernet Sauvignon in their large, informal tasting room. Can float in and out of the building, walking downstairs to the vineyards and sitting in chairs outside, then returning for the next glass.
- Snacks included: None
- Highlights: Extremely impersonal setting (though friendly staff); not impressed by most of the Cabs, though we did bring back one bottle of a single lot varietal that was extremely smooth. Budget-friendly option, casual environment, likely good for a quick drop-in if in the area.

Cakebread Cellars
Cakebread was one of the few vineyards where we were already familiar with the wines. In fact, their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay make recurring appearances at Thanksgiving when we host. I don’t think I’d return here, there are better tastings in the valley, but it was fun nonetheless.
Key notes from the tasting
- Tasting: 50th Anniversary Reserve Library Tasting
- Cost: $100/pp (or $65/pp for wine club members)
- Time: 90 minutes
- Overview: A curated selection of white and red wines from the library, served alongside current releases as well. Served with seasonal bites highlighting food from the estate garden on property. Following the tasting, there was a tour of the tanks, barrels, and garden.
- Snacks included: Paired with salmon rillettes, cheese, and a tasty little gougere sandwich.
- Highlights: This is a group tasting with a total of 8 guests, so you don’t know what type of dynamic it will be until you’re seated. Lucky for us (I’m kidding), 3 of our guests were older adults who were already drunk… not an ideal setting. In addition to newer release wines, we tasted a 1986 red wine that everyone except me enjoyed. It was an interesting experience, though, to try wine throughout the aging process. They do not offer shipping to NJ.

Amizetta
If you want breathtakingly stunning views, Amizetta is the winery for you. One of the few remaining completely family owned and operated wineries in Napa Valley. Be prepared to drive up very steep, windy mountain roads to get here or… hire a driver. Located on the southern side of the beautiful Howell Mountain.
Key notes from the tasting
- Tasting: A tasting of 5 wines, including a tour of their caves.
- Cost: $100/pp (haven’t confirmed, but I believe tastings are free for wine club members)
- Time: 75 minutes
- Overview: A family-owned winery, from the ground up, with reasonably priced wines and a million dollar view. Currently undergoing construction to expand the property — beware of noise during otherwise peaceful and quiet tastings.
- Snacks included: Tasting crackers
- Highlights: Stunning view, at a far better price than Ovid. We were given a taste of a 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon straight out of the barrel from inside the cave — very cool! Had a fantastic, chill host who shared a lot about the family and their history.

Hestan Vineyards
The Hestan Vineyards are located about 45 minutes away from their tasting room in Yountville and are only available for private tours and tastings made in advance. The Yountville location, however, features all of their amazing Hestan Culinary cookware so you can shop and sip at the same time.
Key notes from the tasting
- Tasting: A mix of 5 current release, library wines, and limited release wines.
- Cost: $40/pp (free for wine club members)
- Time: 60-90 minutes
- Overview: Tasting of 5 wines, including rosé, white, and red varietals. Friendly staff and laid back environment in a semi-private tasting room in the heart of Yountville.
- Snacks included: None
- Highlights: Hestan Culinary is one of my long-time clients, and they were kind enough to host John and I for a seated tasting after a tour of the vineyards. The tasting room is an open, yet cozy space, so there will never be more than a few individually seated groups at a time. The Grenache was our personal favorite.

Keplinger Wines
The owners, Helen Keplinger and DJ Warner, a wife and husband duo, are making some of the most elegant and refined wines in Napa. At Keplinger, grapes are sourced from uniquely selected vineyards and then Helen, a master winemaker, turns them into something exquisite.
Key notes from the tasting
- Tasting: A selection of 4 wines from various growing regions, within Napa, Sonoma, and Sierra Foothills.
- Cost: As friends of wine club members, our tasting was complementary.
- Time: 90 minutes
- Overview: The tasting included 1 white and 3 red wines, all made in the style of terroir-focused Rhone wines.
- Snacks included: None
- Highlights: The tasting room is located in downtown Napa in an intimate, yet inviting space. Private tastings only. Welcoming to all lovers of wine, from long time collectors to people just beginning their journey and interested in learning the basics.

Mumm Napa
There are only a few wineries in Napa making sparkling wine. Mumm Napa, probably the most well known, has taken inspiration from Champagne-style wines and modernized the process to increase efficiency. The end result is delicious.
Key notes from the tasting
- Tasting: Outdoor patio tasting
- Cost: $40/pp (free for wine club members) — we were hosted by Mumm (they’re a former client of mine).
- Time: 60 minutes
- Overview: A flight of 4 sparkling wines; We were seated in what looked like a wine club members section that was off to the side.
- Snacks included: Cheese, crackers, dried fruit (available at an additional cost, but highly recommended — excellent pairing)
- Highlights: Fabulous host who was knowledgeable and had been with Mumm Napa for years. Gave us a tour of the facility, including a rundown on how they use new, innovative techniques to create Champagne-inspired bubbly. Assorted cheese and fruit tray paired perfectly with the selected wines. A modern approach to sparkling wine.

Schramsberg Vineyards
A tour of Schramsberg will leave you speechless. They’re continuing to make Champagne-style sparkling wines in the old world way, from the aging process down to the riddling of wine bottles (part of the traditional process used to produce Champagne).
Key notes from the tasting
- Tasting: Cave Tour with All Sparkling Wine Tasting
- Cost: $85/pp (free for wine club members)
- Time: 60-90 minutes
- Overview: You’ll hear an overview of the history of Schramsberg, including its impressive repeated appearances at White House dinners and events. Cave tour, and tasting of 5 different sparkling wines.
- Snacks included: None
- Highlights: In depth overview of the old world way of making Champagne (though it can’t be called that specifically unless the wine is produced in Champagne, France). Incredible caves, and they’re still doing everything here by hand. Loved being able to taste sparkling wines of the same varietal throughout the aging process, side-by-side. Six people present in our group tour.

Paraduxx
We really wanted to love Paraduxx more — a lot of you recommended it! The ambiance is beautiful. In fact, the courtyard where they hold most of their tastings is one of the most serene settings for non-private tastings. Unfortunately, we just didn’t love the wine.
Key notes from the tasting
- Tasting: Paraduxx tasting
- Cost: $55/pp (free for wine club members)
- Time: 60 minutes
- Overview: A tasting of 5 small production Napa Valley, all of which are blends.
- Snacks included: Cheese, crackers, and dried fruit.
- Highlights: Beautiful, spacious courtyard for tasting, though there is also plenty of space inside. They don’t ship to NJ.

Scribe Winery
This winery is an absolute gem! You can tell that everyone who works at Scribe is immensely happy to be there. Set in the southern part of Sonoma, the property is stunningly beautiful, but with a relaxed, laid-back vibe.
Key notes from the tasting
- Tasting: Outdoor patio tasting + food pairing; reservations available only via email and to members of their wine club
- Cost: $63.75/pp
- Time: 90 minutes
- Overview: Seated tasting of 5 wines on a stunning outdoor patio overlooking the vineyards and garden. Knowledgeable and friendly staff.
- Snacks included: Come hungry! Assorted menu including rotating dishes that feature produce from their farm and gardens. Veggie-focused and so delicious. We were served: butter beans and tomatoes in basil oil, fried olives, rosemary almonds, blistered shishitos peppers, lightly dressed melon and cucumbers, a garden salad, and a caponata-inspired eggplant toast. All exceptional.
- Highlights: The best Pinot Noir we’ve ever had; a couple innovative wines we’ve never tried before; unbelievably fresh, flavorful food; gorgeous setting; chill and relaxed atmosphere (well behaved dogs welcome!). Extremely drinkable without aging.
