What is a French 75?
This classic cocktail dates back to the early 1900s in France and was considered to pack a punch, much like a popular gun that was used during that time in WWI. Gin and champagne together in one drink

French 75 ingredients
- distilled gin (our favorite is The Botanist): the base of this drink and the main flavor component; think floral, with hints of juniper
- fresh lemon juice (plus lemon peel for garnish): a direct contrast in taste to the gin and simple syrup
- simple syrup: to balance out the gin and the fresh lemon juice
- Champagne: to add fizz and bubbles to the cocktail, which lightens the drink and adds textural contrast
How to make homemade simple syrup
Making simple syrup at home could not be easier! Combine equal parts of granulated sugar and water in a sauce pan, then bring to a boil until sugar has dissolved, about 1-2 minutes.
I often make a larger amount than I need and store it in a mason jar or container in the refrigerator. Bring ¾ cup sugar + ¾ cup water to a boil, then whisk until sugar has dissolved. Let cool, then add to your favorite cocktail recipes! EASY.

How to make this classic cocktail
Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice, then add 2 oz distilled gin, ¾ oz fresh lemon juice, and ½ oz simple syrup. Secure top, then shake vigorously and strain into a champagne flute. Immediately top with 2 oz cold Champagne. Garnish with twisted lemon peel, then serve immediately.
Variations
- Instead of Champagne, you could certainly substitute Prosecco, Cava, or Brut. You just want that final splash to be bubbly!
- Replace the gin with cognac, which is actually the original spirit used in this popular drink!
- Don’t want to make simple syrup? Agave nectar is a decent substitute in a pinch!
- Fresh out of lemons or want something with a little oomph? Try replacing lemon juice with something a bit more tart such fresh grapefruit juice.

When to serve?
Is there really a wrong time to serve this classic gin cocktail? NOPE. However, given how light and effervescent it is (thanks, Champagne! I see you!), I always recommend this as a summer cocktail. It’s cool, refreshing, and goes down way too easy.
Because of the bubbles, it’s also a great celebratory drink! Champagne cocktails have that special effect, don’t they? Think New Year’s Eve parties or weddings. Cheers to more French 75s!

I’m telling you, the French 75 is as close to cocktail perfection as you’re going to get. So go on, fill your glass!
